Prairie Yellow

Prairie Land stretches beyond the horizon,

horizon becomes immensity,

and the Lakota Sioux who once lived here

are ghosts in cloud shadows and mystery.

Is it only my dreaminess that creates these luminous apparitions?

The Indians of today drive pickups and work herds of cattle

.

The prairie’s endlessness clarifies into long fields

that glow yellow against the darkened buttes.

Sunflowers on the prairie.
