Mountain Lion Poop

A lot of people may not be crazy about poop, but having lived in the remote areas and because I’m curious, I like discovering evidence of animals, which includes their skat. As you can see by comparing these two images of scat, they are similar. I’ve been in the presence of Lions before, and I can tell you that the hairs stand up on the back of your neck if you are aware at all. Attacks are rare, but Bernie makes a tempting little snack! I found these turkey feathers near the mountain lion poop while walking with Bernie on … Continue reading Mountain Lion Poop

PRAIRIE YELLOW

Prairie Yellow Prairie Land stretches beyond the horizon, horizon becomes immensity, and the Lakota Sioux who once lived here are ghosts in cloud shadows and mystery. Is it only my dreaminess that creates these luminous apparitions? The Indians of today drive pickups and work herds of cattle . The prairie’s endlessness clarifies into long fields that glow yellow against the darkened buttes. Sunflowers on the prairie. Long, long yellow rows, bowing to the sky. My Antonia, O Pioneers

Makes me think of Willa Cather, O Pioneers, My Antonia… From My Antonia: There was nothing but land: not a country at all, but the material out of which countries are made. No, there was nothing but land-slightly undulating, I knew, because often our wheels ground against the brake as we went down into a hollow and lurched up again on the other side. I had never before looked up at the sky when there was … Continue reading My Antonia, O Pioneers

PAIRIE WIND AND PRAIRIE DOGGIES

Prairie Wind and Prairie Dogs There are no people where I am standing, but there are plenty of other living things. The little Prairie Dogs for example. They’re instant comedy—running from my car when they hear it, diving into their burrows. Then, popping their little heads up to check again. I can hear their whistling to each other within their colonies. Sorry to be anthropomorphic, but they’re so dang cute! Continue reading PAIRIE WIND AND PRAIRIE DOGGIES

Aberdeen, South Dakota September 18, 2021

This South Dakota sky doesn’t pull any punches. Even now—in early September—you can feel what’s coming: something big, something white, something cold, something way-below-zero cold—like 46 degrees below zero cold. There’s a not-so-subtle hint in this wind out of the West that soon, there will be blizzards, the kind of horizontal ice that whips your face off and causes you to scurry into whatever warm hole is available. Aberdeen, South Dakota reminds me of Hard Times by E.L. Doctorow. His book has a scene where winter is coming, and, because the characters have not built a house that can withstand … Continue reading Aberdeen, South Dakota September 18, 2021
